My mother is planning to move to Tacoma, and is looking for a house < 400K. Just needs breathing space, and maybe a small garden.

I've heard Tacoma is a ghetto city, but I mean there is a University of Washington there, so how bad can it be?

What areas absolute no-nos, and what areas would you consider mind your own business but safe and livable.

Find outskirts... ideally on/near a hill where nobody needs or wants to pass-through on the way to stores/schools/destinations of any sort.

If you won't/can't/don't do that, then Tacoma is no picnic for somebody of 65 and projected to be there for a while...

Obviously no city is 100% ghetto city. If that is all you know, and all your mother knows about the area, I would recommend your mother contact a local real estate agent in Tacoma who will help narrow down the choices to find the right neighborhoods for her.

There are lots of nice areas around Tacoma.

Im 20 mins away from Tacoma across the bridge. Tacoma is pretty safe and they're building a nice park pier type area on the water front.

I would be worried about the meth heads and meth issues people in the Tacoma and surrounding areas have. Some of those areas are pretty sketchy...I live further out in the boonies and there was a junk yard down the dirt road from my house that was used as a meth lab......

You need to be concerned about more than crime. The Asarco Smelter has seriously contaminated the soil in Tacoma:
