Interesting question, we were just there for a day trip to the base of Mt. Rainier late last summer. Ashford gets 64" of rain annually, and 57" of snow. Eatonville and La Grande each have a small grocery store, but you would have to go all the way to Graham for the usual stores and restaurants. As for the volcano, yes, there is always a chance it will blow again some day, and living that close is definitely taking a chance, which may be why there are less than 100 people living there. From Mt. Rainier all the way to Tacoma is in the lahar flow zone, but farther away means more time to get out if it did erupt.

I think if you are going to live in Ashford, you better want a much deeper relationship with the Mountain than just whether it might one day erupt. Yes, it might. But more finely focused... The mountain is the reason for anyone being there. The town is about vacation cabins and mountaineering supplies for regular climbers and tourists... Home of Whittaker Mountaineering, founded by Lou Whitaker, long a fixture as a Mount Rainier guide... also famous for being in the first American climbing party to climb Everest.

When my mother climbed the mountain in the early 60s... Whittaker was one of the guides. I think he probably climbed it more times than anyone before or since.

There are a couple small stores in town for buying weekly groceries like milk and bread things you're out of... There's a bar and grill. I'm sure people who live in Ashford year round probably make semi-regular treks down to buy major supplies, but you probably need to have a lifestyle of being able to hunker down for long periods when necessary.

And it's beautiful there... And remote, if that's what you're looking for.

At least, it's as remote as you can get while still being on the way to one of the state's major tourist attractions.
