Another thing OP might like is McIntyre Hall. It is beautiful (I've been to events there and can verify its awesomeness). It has plays, symphony, the Nutcracker etc. Lots of parking as well.

There's also historic Lincoln Theater downtown. It is awesome inside and a fun place to watch movies.

Mt. Vernon is kind of gritty with train tracks and the highway through town. The train can back traffic up when it goes through since it cuts right through town and multiple roads have to stop for the train. It also has the usual homeless/property crime issues you find up and down I5 but it has a few gems. The best thing is to visit, browse around downtown and get a feel for if its a good fit.

I don’t love rain for the sake of being wet. But I do appreciate the green it brings. I love our tall trees!

And for what it’s worth I’m not a great fan of sun! I love our grey days. I’d rather work outside in overcast than bright sun any day. I understand other people feel different that’s why it’s great this is such a big diverse country with lots of different climates.

The sun wilts the life out of me. Bring me clouds and shade.
Generally the whole area. Again, nothing personal to current residents, but I have found the weather north of Seattle is worse. I love the daffodil festival, love the islands, but it ends there for me. Seems depressed not only Mt Vernon, but Burlington, Arlington, etc. Unemployment is higher than the rest of the State. These towns look uninspired, but I am sure there are still inspired folks who reside there.

They have a vaguely post apocalyptic vs. quaint look I agree. The only really cute downtown (in my opinion, comparing to other parts of the country) in the area is Fairhaven in Bellingham.

The area has its gems but it's kind of scuzzy looking.

I didn’t mean to diss this area. I think there may be huge potential but it will take a better business effort. I don’t see it currently.

I'm the same way Diana :-) Not only that, I do enjoy moody weather when it blows in, storm watching on the coast, etc. Hot and glaring in your eyes... not my thing.

Do not like the train for sure. However, one of the reasons I started looking at this area is my total frustration with the train hugging Puget Sound all the way from just north of Discovery Park through Everett and then again further north of Mount Vernon. You literally can't enjoy any parks along Puget Sound without a train roaring through. At least there are nature opportunities in every direction from Mount Vernon that do not have a train, including many opportunities on the Puget Sound.

I may start a separate thread on this but can anyone tell me if the military and Boeing planes fly over Mount Vernon and the areas East/SE/SW, including Anacortes, La Conner, north Camano Island (where the parks are), San Juan Islands, Guemes Island, Samish Island/Padilla Bay/Edison/Bow? I know it's a major problem on some of Camano Island and Whidbey Island.

The Growlers fly over the whole area, depending on the flight path and training. It's not every day but can be loud during training weeks. The flight paths they take vary. At times you can hear them in Anacortes, Mt. Vernon and beyond.

I live in Oak Harbor, nearly on the water. They don't fly over the city, unless they're headed high and east. Too bad, because I would have a great view of them.

They definitely look cool when they fly over. I don't like the sound but always pause to look at them. The flight paths go over some areas on the mainland.

Mt Vernon has a good co-op. I'm hooked on it! It's a local phenom, not a branch of PCC, which was very disappointing when I last visited it. PCC has switched over to a corporate model, and looked and felt like an impersonal Whole Foods. Mt. Vernon's is a good, old-fashioned co-op, that carries, locally-made foodstuffs, and has a good and varied deli section.

I love a good co-op.
