Well, it is not about the money. But you get to a certain point in your life, where moving is not worth it. For what it is worth I lived in Coeur d'Alene, Wenatchee, Vancouver, BC and Colville in the northwest.

Anyway, if I was 20 years younger today.....I would move to the Pomeroy area.

No, it's not about the money per se, but it just happens to turn out, that some of the nicest, most pleasant and placid areas are very expensive. And some of them didn't get that way without money. Communities or neighborhoods have agreed to pay a special tax, in order to maintain open space, for example. That costs a pretty penny. In some instances, it costs so much, the people doing the paying have to rent their homes out when they're away, to help compensate for the cost of maintaining that bucolic, bygone-era feel.

I think we're probably heading back east in a few years (our youngest has already declared he's leaving this "bummie" state), but if we did stay and this project my husband is working delivers the "dump truck of cash" that's being promised, then, well... I'd say maybe it's island life for us? We'd get a place away from Seattle. Something on the water and in the woods. I'd start my own coffee shop. It would be the cozy, warm and fuzzy type. Not the modern, minimalistic chic type, but something in converted arts and crafts bungalow or a brick and mortar store front in the historic district in an old county seat. Beat up wood floors we'd describe as "character". Tall ceilings and large windows.

There is such a place up in Snohomish. It's called Looking Glass Coffee. https://www.lookingglasscoffee.com/

Capitol Hill. Great assortment of businesses and access to the rest of Seattle. The rents there actually aren't terrible compared to some parts of the city, but open parking spaces are like hen's teeth so you'd have to get a building with a garage (if you didn't want to sell your car).

Supposing I were in eastern WA, though: the area just west of downtown Spokane (like around 1st Ave) seems cool. Old brick architecture, lots of bars and other new businesses, a revitalizing feel. The city has some decent neighborhoods.

I'm not a small-town guy but if I had to pick one somewhere in the state, outside the orbit of larger metros, I like Walla Walla.

A Victorian home in Port Townsend on a hill upwind from the mill but overlooks either the Straight or Puget Sound. With a plot devoted to a garden with deer fencing.

(Note, living there with the money to pay for any expensive repairs to the roof/plumbing/siding/flooring, etc. )

Oddly, the premise of the thread is "if-cost-were-not-factor" yet everyone is selecting places that are very reasonably priced, in fact for some of us less expensive than where we live now.

It certainly is for us! Although I would probably up our game to far more acreage! The other major factor in the question is the need to commute or make money. Often a major consideration! As big as the actual cost of the purchase.

So far though, you’re right… No one is saying they want a penthouse apartment anywhere or an estate in Medina.
