Bellingham is sketchy? Puhhhleeeeze. Aren't you from Gastonia? That is way more dangerous than Bellingham, and every city in NC or the east coast has much larger areas within them that you'd never even venture into, and you're afraid of Bellingham because there are some homeless people in a small industrial area between the downtown and the marina? I'm now convinced that some people just don't like somewhat urban places. I prefer the vibrance of a slightly larger place, and we get that here.
Seriously- come visit my neighborhood, or any of the core neighborhoods in Bellingham. We can walk, bike, push strollers, to cafes, beer gardens, restaurants, parks- whatever you'd like. Again, if you don't like cities, fine. But don't trash mine because you prefer smaller towns.

I'm assuming that you're talking about Texas east of I-5 in the Roosevelt where there happen to be a bunch of rental units, because west of I-5, Texas St is safe and highly walkable to Trader Joe's, restaurants on James, and downtown. Anyway- that part of the neighborhood you're looking at is a little run down, but will improve, too, as it's some of the last somewhat reasonably priced real estate in the middle of town.
Again, you mention safety (and yes, you did imply danger with your "fear of walking around at night" post) and yet generalize the whole city based on very small areas. Do you really think sketchy is a fair assessment of the whole city? Why mention that, and nothing about the desirability of the York, Sunnyland, Lettered Streets, Columbia, Cornwall Park, Fountain District, South Hill, Fairhaven, or even Happy Valley neighborhoods?
Yes, there are a lot of older houses here, and coming from a much less expensive part of the country, everything seems overpriced. After all, I could buy a huge new construction house in NC for the price of my 2 BD Sunnyland bungalow here. People place a high premium for location in Bellingham, and a ton of people are willing to compromise square footage for urban amenities, like the ability to ditch their cars and walk or ride bikes to shop or eat. They may not be priorities if someone prefers new cookie cutter homes, cul-de-sacs and gated communities, however. But for many, they're worth the high price of admission. So I'm curious-why do you even want to live in Bellingham?
And one last thing. "Bummy rainbow flag waving homeless"? Dude, most local businesses here- and many houses- have rainbow flags flying to show their support and acceptance of the gay community. The fact that you think it's relegated to the "bummy homeless" -is a little out of touch. You may want to modernize your perspective and wording a tiny bit before considering a move to town.

Re: major crime, Bellingham had higher reported rates when you started this thread 12 years ago than in last reported year of 2016. Got generally worse since 2008 though. About 30% worse than national average in 2016. 2018 data might be available from feds if any want it.
My primary point is that there is a large amount of crime centered around the homeless/drug addicts/mentally ill that are represented in the police report. The "more information" arrow at the bottom of the police report page offers the tally of the various crimes up to 5 years back. Much like having our own little slice of Seattle, we've got homeless shooting up, drinking, passed out, and going #1/#2 in our parks, leaving trash, bottles, and needles along our trails, and harassing people in places of businesses. We have more crime and more drugs being dealt as these people steal and panhandle for drug money. Bicycle theft is common because they will sell or recycle the parts for drug money. Worse yet, many of them are not mentally stable, and will approach people asking for money and then start yelling or assault people when they don't give them some. Why are these people left on the street doing what they do, at great detriment to our city, our people, as well as themselves(most are in and out of the ER for overdose, some die from exposure when it gets wet/cold) when we are supposed to be this "open arms sanctuary city"?
We have an ongoing conversation among family and friends up here. "Would you walk from the east end of Holly St. to the church at Holly and Broadway at night?" Only one said yes because they carry at all times. I still wouldn't.
The crime, violence, disease, needles, and trash resulting from the homeless/druggie issues seem to be on the mend somewhat due to public outcry...and it's election time for our local officials....so we'll see how it plays out.
I have little faith in Realtors, of course realtors would confirm it.....they sugar coat everything.....even 100 year old "charmer" homes full of dry rot on foundations that are slowly sinking into the empty coal mineshafts that run all over under the west side of town.
Again, I guess it's all relative, and based on one's experience. I've lived in cities ten times Bellingham's size, and towns one-tenth it's size. You've lived in one city your whole life and watched it double in size and transition from an industrial backwater to a highly desirable destination for working adults, students, and retirees. That may be understandably frustrating if you're looking to buy a home and/or missed out on your opportunity to do so on the cheap. But to act like crime and inflation, etc. etc. only occurs here is just plain silly, as is the insinuation that it's somehow less appealing than it was five or ten or twenty years ago. And your description of places- like the entirety of Holly Street- is so generalized that I wonder if you even live here or visit the places you reference.
As usual, I'm confused as to the point of your weird anti-Bellingham threads and posts. Are you just trying to tell people not to fall for Bellingham's appeal, and show them that it's not all it's cracked up to be? Or are you just nostalgic for the time when people didn't have Bellingham on their radar? Again, many of us have the benefit of living in other places, and we love it here. And while I appreciate your public service announcements about the possibility of sinking foundations on hundred year old homes, I don't think it will achieve your apparent desire to steer people away from this place.
Again, like the other curmudgeons here, you simultaneously want to paint the picture that everything here is terrible, and yet complain about all the new growth, traffic and high real estate prices- which are all direct effects from people wanting to be here. Do you not see the disconnect in that logic? Do you think that everyone moving here is misguided? Do you think that realtors (who you don't believe), perspective buyers, visitors, national experts, developers and business people just don't understand how the world works, but only you do?
It sounds like one of the people who likes Bellingham the least is YOU. If you own a house, why not cash out on all the equity you've gained and buy a McMansion somewhere else? I'm sure you'll find the appreciation on your investment helpful... Or did you miss out on the opportunity to buy something affordable here, and are exacting revenge by being a Debbie Downer?
Again, we love it here, and while the Bellingham has typical problems encountered by cities with similar populations, including a sizeable homeless population that you can EASILY avoid any and all contact with by not going to certain, small areas. We feel far safer in general than we have in Clearwater, FL, Gainesville, FL, Hickory, NC, Asheville, NC, Charlotte, NC, Denver, CO, and Glenwood Springs, CO. Crime stats are often confusing, misleading, inconsistently recorded, and paint incomplete pictures of daily life, and many highly desirable locales around the country look bad if that alone is the metric for your assessment. The crime rate in Bellingham could probably be significantly reduced if people just locked up their bikes! Again, I just don't know what your point is. Do you like this town or not? If you live in constant fear of walking down main streets here, your potential list of relocation destinations is going to be small, and definitely won't include cities of any size. Because again, as I've mentioned in other posts- I think the think the thing people like yourself don't like is cities.
We've invested heavily in being part of the community and making it a better place. We also participate in all kinds of neighborhood and city groups, and we spend our money locally. But how Are YOU making this a better place, or are you just trying to badmouth it and scare people away with the weird, selfish desire for it to return to 1985?
If people want to know what the "ugly truth" is about Bellingham, it's that many people want to live here, and that some locals don't like change and feel that the only control they have over growth is to make our city look as negative as possible.

Sorry I didn't sort out the remedial reports for the nitpickers, and screwed things up for the realtors promoting Bellingham here on CD.
Even on this very city data forum in the Bellingham statistics and comments section, there is a lot of people who moved here only to turn around and move back out, some that even lost everything (moving costs and 1st/last/deposits are expensive!) and had to move back in with their parents back where they came from. Realtors sugar coat everything, "see the eagles, bay, and mountains from your homes picture window", and show ads of people zipping through the countryside in a convertible, wine tasting, not another car in sight. Reality, for most, is far from this as can be read in my posts here. Housing costs are just so far out of touch with the job opportunities I don't know how 90% of the working residents make ends meet. Bellingham is going down a path to big problems if they don't start dealing with the homeless/mentally ill, and the resulting crime/drugs. I had a neighbor that was a policeman that quit and left down, and a relative with a business in downtown that is right in the middle of it all, and has been since the late 60's, and they'd both never seen it so bad. If this post saved ONE family from moving here to experience this, then it served it's purpose.
I invite you to come and visit the memorials under the Lincoln street overpass and on the Whatcom creek trail, ask those people how "avoiding the homeless and mentally ill worked for them"?
Selfish desire to return it to 1985? No not at all....anything but. My clock has been counting down for a year now and I might as well go ahead and post that I'm out. No McMansion for me, neither buying nor selling one, wouldn't want one. But it's safe to say I've had enough, my time living in Bellingham is coming to an end, and happily so. You can have it.
I'm assuming that you're talking about Texas east of I-5 in the Roosevelt where there happen to be a bunch of rental units, because west of I-5, Texas St is safe and highly walkable to Trader Joe's, restaurants on James, and downtown. Anyway- that part of the neighborhood you're looking at is a little run down, but will improve, too, as it's some of the last somewhat reasonably priced real estate in the middle of town.
Again, you mention safety (and yes, you did imply danger with your "fear of walking around at night" post) and yet generalize the whole city based on very small areas. Do you really think sketchy is a fair assessment of the whole city? Why mention that, and nothing about the desirability of the York, Sunnyland, Lettered Streets, Columbia, Cornwall Park, Fountain District, South Hill, Fairhaven, or even Happy Valley neighborhoods?
Yes, there are a lot of older houses here, and coming from a much less expensive part of the country, everything seems overpriced. After all, I could buy a huge new construction house in NC for the price of my 2 BD Sunnyland bungalow here. People place a high premium for location in Bellingham, and a ton of people are willing to compromise square footage for urban amenities, like the ability to ditch their cars and walk or ride bikes to shop or eat. They may not be priorities if someone prefers new cookie cutter homes, cul-de-sacs and gated communities, however. But for many, they're worth the high price of admission. So I'm curious-why do you even want to live in Bellingham?
And one last thing. "Bummy rainbow flag waving homeless"? Dude, most local businesses here- and many houses- have rainbow flags flying to show their support and acceptance of the gay community. The fact that you think it's relegated to the "bummy homeless" -is a little out of touch. You may want to modernize your perspective and wording a tiny bit before considering a move to town.
There's no need to explain the good neighborhoods, as I have seen them. I didn't pick whatcom county off from a map to move here, it's because of proximity to family I settled here. Are you offended of "bummy homeless", what else should I say. The locals here aren't nearly as hardcore as the criminals on the east coast, and bellingham is obsessed with rainbow flags so that's how I describe them.
