I just looked up the property tax rate in California and did a hypothetical at $200,000
In WA = $1882 ($9.41 per $1,000)
In CA, Los Angeles county = $2500 (@ 1.25%)

The other question:
If you buy a house for $200,000, what is the appraised value that is taxed?

It varies. Some are close to market value, others are not.

And so, buying the same house, at the same price, the tax rate makes a difference, but the appraisal could increase that difference, or reduce the difference to almost nothing.

9.41 per 1000 would be the base rate. Gotta add in all of the levees and other fees (both those that were voter approved and those that somehow got slipped in). Even when my tax appraisal was around $208K, I paid more than 3 times the amount you posted.

The real estate here is ridiculously overpriced. There are very little jobs here and the people seem to want to keep it that way. It's very cliquey and unfriendly. A long-time resident visited Boston and remarked about how friendly they were and that people here won't even look at you. The town is almost completely white. Funny that someone mentioned crime as I too am from a major city yet since I've been here, I've been stolen from, checks forged, attacked, you name it. And yes, people definitely live in their little bubbles and want NO part of you. I came here for WWU. That was a good experience. The trails are plentiful here, yes. And I can kayak. Great. I can't wait to move!

Well, you can only stand hearing "eh?" and "aboot" repeated so many times, don'tcha know!

BTW, it always cracks me up hearing folks complain about California's "high taxes! Though it's true WA State doesn't have any state income tax, the current taxes on my 3,000 sq ft Cali rambler are only a fraction of what they were on my 2,700sq ft. WA home (thanks to Prop 13)!

$40.00 per DAY for my WA house that I built for under $100k.

Yup $14,400/yr. so I pay for my house every 7 yrs. in useless property taxes in WA (I'm not in Whatcom County, but obviously this is a STATE problem). Surely some attorney wants a 'class action' gold mine
