My husband and I are thinking about moving from Yakima, Washington to St. John, Washington or within the surrounding area. We need to be advised what this community is like and what the surrounding communities are alike. We have visited Colfax and Steptoe and was very impressed with the area. We would like to be advised what the weather is like during the 4 seasons, what the community is like i.e. people, businesses etc. Will be looking forward to your responses.

Hi. Have you checked City-Data.com yet? The St. John page includes a great deal of info about weather, population breakdown, housing, businesses, and so forth. It's a nice start.

If you like a very isolated, very small, very stagnate town it might be for you. I used to live about 50 miles from there and went through it occasionally. Not much there. I much preferred Colfax because I thought the countryside around it was nice and the town was a considerably more vibrant.

I've visited a lot of the small towns in the area, but haven't made the choice as to which one I'll move to yet. St Johns is pretty high on the list. Was friendlier and more services available than most. I would get some contacts and lodge in some private homes in a few towns and get to know the locals. Talk with the PTA folks if you have kids in school, but get a variety of opinions from 'non-leaders' (promoters).

You need to have (or acquire) a passion for small towns, or you may be disappointed. Some are easier to integrate into than others, ask newcomers about their experiences.
Rent a place first, as it can be hard to re-sell in small town America.
