My husband and I want to leave Michigan because the economy is so bad here. We're considering Oregon or Washington because we prefer the mild climates and want to be by the oceans and mountains. The Pacific Northwest seems so beautiful!

I have some very vague questions:

How's the economy? What kind of work is prevelant?
Suggested places to move? Why?
Suggested areas to avoid? Why?

Any and all input much appreciated...

We would love to help, but will need more info. What sort of jobs are you looking at? Can you transfer within your company? Do you have children? How old? How important are sports for them? Do you want to rent a home? or buy?

Let us know!

My husband works in the security sector, he has extensive military/security background so he can probably find any kind of related work in that field. I'm still in school (not sure where I want to transfer yet); looking into Veterinary Technology one day. Would like to find work in animal shelters/kennels but I also have experiance in the hotel industry and restaurant business as well.

We will most likely rent.

We have no children and don't plan on doing so.

City life and entertainment is not too important to us; we want to be relatively close to the water, parks, and in a safe and clean area.

Thanks for your help!!!

Annika,

Check out the Olympia area of Washington. With your husbands background he should be able to get employment at Fort Lewis, or McChord AFB. He can check for jobs at www.usajobs.com.
Olympia has two colleges (Evergreen State College and South Puget Sound Community College). The city is quaint and is located on Puget Sound and within 90 minutes from the open ocean to one side and Mt. Rainier to the other side.
I'd recommend coming out here for a visit first to see if you like the area.

Sandy

Ditto on Sandys advice....

I was going to do Vet Tech many years ago ... kick myself for not. Many vets in area -- as a side note I just found job for Vet Tech on Big lsland of HI - who knew?

State and FT Lewis sounds like your husband might find a job also. If you haven't done your vet tech schooling check out Pierce College in Tacoma... Great program.

Just have to like rain!

Western Washington is clean -- surface, air, and rain -- and a pretty safe area, especially compared with other U.S. areas with similar populations.

To check out the job market in the Puget Sound area, here are two resources.

The Olympian, the newspaper which covers the entire area, and more, that Sandy Nelson described:
Thurston County's Homepage - The Olympian - Olympia, Washington

The combined classifieds of the two leading newspapers which cover a very wide area around Seattle:

I have to reccomment to you that jobs be lined up prior to the move. With today's economy, it's tough. I know that he has an expertise, but that never is a guarantee of employment.

Good luck and hopefully soon we can welcome you to our beautiful state!
