Hello. Many of the posts I found about Yakima are out dated and I was curious on how things are like now. My family is getting restationed there from North Carolina, and we don't have the means to scope out the city physically. Any input is appreciated.

Hey CelestRod,

My husband and I are military and are being relocated from Georgia to Yakima this winter. Are you there yet?

It has the nickname "Crackima" due to the high amount of drug traffic through the area. Crime is relatively isolated to people involved in that trade. For a city of its size it has some pretty bad areas, but that is balanced by the whole wine industry and tourism that follows it. Good news is that for WA the housing is very reasonable. And great hamburgers at a place called Miners...

The city proper is not all that well run, it has it's charms but I would live outside the city limits. The Yakima Firing Range is north of town, the north end is nicer than most of the rest of the city, there are a few decent apartment complexes on the north side.

If I were working in that area I would try to get a house on Canyon Road, but I am into outdoor stuff.

Miner's is a local gem, actually there are several very good restaurants in town, including El Porton, and Essencia bakery.

The climate of Central Washington is very different from Western Washington. It is like they are two different states. Yakima is a lot more arid then the other side of the Cascades and there are a lot sagebrush and bunch grass instead of evergreen tree and thick brush west of the mountains. It is nice in a way because it rains a lot less in Yakima than west of the mountains and you should pay attention to the road conditions of the mountain passes in the fall and winter because you never know what they are going to be like.
