I was just hoping for some helpful advice. I am moving from NC to WA very soon and am wondering what the best route is. It has been suggested to just sell everything and fly - and have the essentials shipped to me. But I am wondering how much I can really leave behind. Any helpful tips on moving across the country?

The best route depends on where you in the two states you are moving to/from and how comfortable you are driving across the mountain passes in possibly bad weather.

I made the same move last year but later in the spring and weather wasn't a concern. I went up to WV, got on I-64 to St Louis then on to I-70 until Kansas City. From there I took I-29 North to I-80 until Salt Lake city. Then I-84 north into Washington State. Like I said, no weather issues because of the time of the year, but there were certainly parts of the trip that looked like they could get bad in the winter. And if you're heading towards Seattle or Spokane, you might want to take a more northern route on I-90.

I had a moving company move our stuff out and just drove my car. It cost between $7k and $8k for all the stuff in our small house.

I agree with MovingOutWest. I left NC for DC/NOVA then Seattle (I'm a NW native) and that's about the best route. Avoid going through Chicago unless you're driving at night or during some other light traffic time.

And eat all the BBQ you can before you get here. Hush puppies, coleslaw, Eastern Style--nothing here I've found to replace it.

Agreed. I ended up finding a recipe on line and make my own sauce and BBQ.
