just wondering about the crime because im going to be moving there from las vegas. i visited there for 3 weeks in the zip code of 98404 and didnt see any sketchy things happen.

ive read through the other post on here about crime there but alot of them are old and have alot of mixed reviews because i guess people from seattle like putting tacoma down?

is it really as bad as its made out to be?

It isn't really that bad. The main issue in the city right now is break-ins which is probably because of the economy. 98404 has probably the highest crime rate in Tacoma. Like any city there are areas that have higher crime rates and areas that have lower ones. So far this year (and last year) things have been pretty quiet.

Yes, it is that BAD.
But go ahead and move there if you wish so. Just make sure to get your concealed weapon permit...

You may see comments from people who have not spent much time in Tacoma, or from folks who have only been in some crummy neighborhoods.
Jake 840 lives in Tacoma and seems to know the city well, and it's various neighborhoods.
As far as my own experience as a fairly regular visitor to Tacoma, it does have some crime ridden and ugly, bland neighborhoods. But it also has some absolutely beautiful areas, safe areas, and fun areas that are far less expensive than Seattle.

Oh my, Tacoma has SOO much crime </sarcasm>

Yeah, look at St. Louis. Tacoma has 7.1 murders per 100,000. St. Louis: 39.6.

Kansas City: 25...

Oh no, so much crime - boo hoo!!!

People with an axe to grind are funny.

Tacoma's fine. I lived in 98405 for 4 years, and had a lawn mower stolen from a garden shed the day I moved into my first home. Folks who think Tacoma's a bad place to live or has high crime have very little perspective.
I'm happier living in Gig Harbor than I was in Tacoma 'cause it fits my lifestyle better (I don't like cities, I don't like traffic, I like large lots, etc), but I wouldn't hesitate at all if we ever had to move back.

This question has been drug through the mud so many times. Yes there are some very bad areas, and there are some very nice areas.

I just recently moved to the N. 26th and Alder area. BEAUTIFUL area with beautiful homes. Older turn of the century homes that are spectacular. Not a bit of crime in the area. I can walk to many great things. Rams must have never been up by where I live, because it is far from dangerous. Unless you consider families walking their children dangerous.

We live in University Place which butts up against Tacoma. There isn't an area that I'd feel unsafe walking around during the day and none that I'd worry about driving through at night. There are some really nice neighborhoods as well (like Luke mentioned.)

98444 is hit or miss. I don't have much experience there, but from looking at a map, I probably wouldn't move there. The commute might be terrible also, depending on where you work.
