Western Washington is one of the best places in the world for mushroom hunting. There are definitely morels, and many, many others. For more information, and to find a community of people who are enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable about mushrooms, visit the website of the Puget Sound Mycological Society at Puget Sound Mycological Society: Homepage

I have been in the woods now 7 or 8 times, and collecting chantrell mushrooms, with a local Back woods hippy/ logger, we have had a great time collecting Mushrooms. I had to buy a good set of hightop boots or risk a sprained ankel in the woods ....Not good, There are soft spots on the forest floor and you can find your foot drop deep in them, and climing out of them can be a challage. Lots of exerosize and easy to get lost if you don't pay attension to where you are going and where have been, we use hill sides to keep track of our path, ans we keep the road below us so the way out in allway down. Good luck

Please be careful when selecting mushrooms. Im sure you guys know what you are doing but reading these posts remind me of a story I heard when my son was a baby. Here in Texas it dosent rain constantly like Washington but after a few days rain, this baby was outside in his backyard playing. Apparently some kind of mushroom sprouted in his yard and he picked them up and ate some. He came inside a short while later feeling ill. His mom saw blood in his diaper. he was dead by the time he made it to the hospital. They were some kind of bad poisionous type. After I heard that, it scared me about eating wild mushrooms. Im sure if you know what you are doing things will be find. Im just asking you make sure. Ill never forget that story and really watched my baby after that when we had rains. Ive seen weird mushrooms in my yard from time to time. I just push them down and toss them in the trash.

Default Help

I also live in the Tacoma Parkland area and I live on about one acre of land. I have about half of this land swamp-like and the other half grassy covered with leaves and weeds. I have found about 6 or 7 different kinds of mushrooms here and I am having NO luck identifying them except one (which I have positively identified as ink caps) but no luck with the others. If I post pictures of them would somebody please help me identify them and also confirm or deny them as being hallucinogenic mushrooms. PLEASE HELP!

I'm not sure I'd take the advice of anonymous posters on a board such as this when it comes to mushroom identification as it really takes some studying to correctly identify a mushroom. One mistake can be deadly so I'd tend to recommend having them examined physically by an expert.

The Puget Sound Mycological Society will identify any specimen brought to them at the Center for Urban Horticulture near the U of W or at their monthly meetings. However, I'm not sure if they have a location in Tacoma or not.

I'd still try to contact them, no matter:

If you would like help with mushroom identification bring your mushroom to our monthly meeting or ID Clinic, email id@psms.org, or call Hildegard at (206) 523-2892

If you're into psilocybin mushrooms, I'll PM you a link to a good forum on magic mushrooms.

or for those on the peninsula, the Oly Pen club is a very good resource also:

A good pocket field guide is indispensable. I like Arora's book ("All That The Rain Promises") but everyone has their personal favorite and there are several nice options available.
