I previously asked about property taxes and received a lot of help from some wonderful people. Hubby and I have pretty much made our decision and plan to move to Sequim (that is if we can ever sell our present home). I am wondering if the hospitals offer major surgeries (i.e. heart, stroke, bypass or something on a similar level of complexity) or if those type of procedures are performed in Seattle? If so, and there is an emergency are the people airlifted? Does anyone have an insurance policy to help defray the costs of airlifting? If so, could you share the cost of it? I ask because that is what is done in other smaller towns I have looked at in the past.

Thanks so much!

Default Medicine in Sequim

Sequim has a decent medical community. The olympic medical center in Port Angeles provides services for the area. The UW cardiologists provide service in Bremerton which is also pretty accessible. About Med airlift services it all depends on your medical insurance.

If by "major" you mean something along the lines of CABG (coronary bypass), then yes a procedure of that level will be done in Seattle or surrounds rather than in Sequim or at OMC (Olympic Medical Center) in PA. Other places to have this sort of handiwork done would include Tacoma, Olympia or perhaps Bellingham if you're traveling that way (as well as in any other major metropolitan area in the state).

One of the "features" of living on the peninsula is that you get to travel for access to many major and specialty services, regardless of whether one is talking about shopping at Nordstroms, servicing your BMW or having an aortic valve replaced! OTOH we have the basics covered pretty well here: Safeway, Albertsons, Home Depot, Walmart, Costco etc.

Trauma cases are occasionally airlifted from the peninsula to Harborview in Seattle but airlift is not an everyday occurrence from here. It seems that if a person might die before an ambulance (or logging truck! ) could get him/her the 2 1/2 hours over to Harborview then an airlift helicopter is summoned. Most people usually go by ambulance or private vehicle. Airlift overage will depend upon your particular insurance policy and I would check with your agent in this regard.
