Is it possible to take a driving tour of a couple of towns close to Seattle, the Olympic peninsula (Sequim and Port Townsend) and the San Juan islands within 7 - 10 days? This would include ferrying to any islands which are especially interesting, of which I have no idea at this point. What are the highlight areas which would give us a good picture of life in this area of the country? Thanks in advance for all of your well considered opinions!

We have 2 - 3 weeks allotted for this excursion and want to see parts of Oregon, also, so I think I should have half a dozen communities targeted in each state.

Absolutely, and can be easily done in 7-10 days. Whidbey Island is worth seeing, especially Langley. The town of La Conner is also very picturesque.

Spend $99 and join the auto club AAA They wll provide you with maps for your destinations and books that provide detailed information about sights along the way and places to camp or stay along with prices. Most places in their books offer up to 10% discounts which willl pay for your membership.

Not to mention the free maps.

Road maps cost about $5 each if you have to buy them, and I like to have one for any trip I make so I can see upcoming rest stops, distances etc. as well as maps of the towns and cities along the way. It makes it much easier to find your way around and get back to the highway when you go into the town.

AAA also has great tour, guide, and camping maps and books - all free.

And then there's the greatest benefit of all - towing and road service.

That's pretty easy. You could achieve a more ambitious schedule with no trouble, without losing any quality of visits.
