Hey there,
I am looking for some info on Olympia and the surrounding areas. I am considering a move to this area and am wondering if I can live in a "rural" area? Are there alternative elementary schools (like charters and montessori, etc)?

Olympia isn't rural and neither are the adjoining towns such as Lacey. Still relatively affordable to live in, decent schools and crime is relatively under control. You can buy decent homes in Lacey in the low 200k range or so.

Olympia is a mid sized city. Together with the adjoining cities of Lacey and Tumwater there are over 130,000 residents. The nice thing about the Olympia area is that there are still rural pockets. You can drive 10 minutes from town and live in a pastoral setting. The area offers all the city amenities, such as theaters, galleries, museums, mall, big box stores, hospitals and cultural events. One of the amenities is a variety of schools. There is a Montessori school, a Waldorf school, Avanti High School, Nova, Lincoln Elementary, as well as the Evergreen State College. Olympia was ranked the safest mid sized city in the US these past two years in a row. Housing in Olympia is decent and affordable and there really are no "wrong side of the tracks" areas.
I hope this helps.
