I'm active duty military & have been serving overseas for the last 6 years. I purchased a car through Military Car Sales & will have it shipped from the BMW factory in Germany to Washington. I'm a California resident but will be relocating to WA.
Is there a program of "tax exemption" in WA for military returning back to the United States after serving overseas & have purchased a vehicle as described above?
Appreciate any leads or help. I have heard some states do offer this exemption. I dont want to find myself in a nightmare where I have to pay quite a bit of money to register this vehicle in WA.
Thank you.

Rob,

I assume you didn't have to pay the VAT in Germany for the purchase of the new car. Most likely you'll have to pay "use tax" here in Washington. Use tax is a tax on items used in Washington when sales tax has not been paid. WA State Licensing: Use tax
Call the number listed on that website to ask if this would apply to you.
Good luck with your move.

The registration is cheap.

It is the sales tax that will cost you. It is called the use tax. When I moved from Idaho to Washington I did not have to pay it on the vehicles I already owned. When I bought my new truck in Idaho and a used RV I had to pay on both before they could be licensed in Washington.

Ask lots of questions of the state folks. It is easy to get a wrong answer on stuff like this.
