Im from Seattle but just got back from a weekend visit in Walla Walla. It has some beautiful architecture and having Whitman college with parents in for alumni weekend made it feel busy although Saturday and Sunday weather was surprisingly rainy. The wine is first rate, restaurants high quality and definitely a walking and biking town, very flat. We went to farmers market on Saturday in town and had excellent produce and bread from bakery was amazing. There is a strong artist movement going on. People were very friendly. They have a Macys and Sears and one mega cineplex movie theater. For bigger city needs a new four lane highway is being built which will make the drive easier to tri cities(approx. 49 miles.) Spokane and Portland about same distance 120 miles or so and Seattle all freeway about a 4.25 hour drive. Have a airport where Horizon/Alaska Air turboprop plane will take you to Seattle Tacoma Intl airport in about 45 minutes. Housing prices pretty cheap compared to Seattle but expensive I am guessing compared to Texas.

Spokane and Portland are not the same distance from Walla Walla.

Spokane is about 150 miles (156.79 according to mapquest).

Portland is about 250 miles according to mapquest.

I had to look because I knew it took me about twice as long to get to Portland as Spokane from there...didn't think it was all freeway to Seattle either...yet.
