Hi all:

I am looking into a position at the university in Ellensburg, coming from Oregon. We love being able to head right out of our door and head for hikes in the woods with our dogs. It looks like you would have to drive from the town itself. Any nearby towns that are affordable and a reasonable commute to Ellensburgh?

We would like to find something reasonably affordable, a small piece of property would be nice to, but lower priority than easy access to hiking, mountain biking, trail running, etc. I am looking for the best neighborhoods or rural residential areas. Are Cle Elum and Roslyn possibilities?

Thanks!

Congrats for your job at CWU ('07 grad here).

Cle Elum is about a half hour drive, with Roslyn being closer to 45. It is worth noting that winter storms will make this commute much much longer.

You may want to look into the unincorporated areas around Ellensburg. If you take University Way, East out of town, there is a fair amount of rural housing North - North East of the city where you should be able to get some acreage.

Another possibility would be to head South out of town on Main Street. This turns into I-82, a road which follows the Yakima river in a valley of Manastash ridge. If you could find housing in that area, I'm sure there would be plenty of "hike out your door" opportunities.

In town, it is worth noting that the city is fairly rural besides the cookie cutter college student housing.

Let me know if you have any other questions, or questions about the city.

Hi Hibbity Dibbity,

I don't have a job there yet! I am just applying this month. But I like to learns as much as I can. Sounds like Cle Elum is out. Who needs that commute on a daily basis..I am just trying to learn as much about the town as I can. Hiking and lifestyle stuff are important, but so would be a job for my wife. She works in human resources. Any federal agencies in town?

Whoops. My fault on the premature congratulations!

What do you mean as far as federal agencies? DoD, CIA, DIA? None -- that I'm aware of. Closest would be State -- Kittitas County Jail and Court, as well as the University.

It's a fairly small town. Per Wikipedia (Ellensburg, Washington - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) shows that as a town of 15,000, 9000 are students.

Driving the economy is:
- CWU
- County Court system
- Farming

Hope this helps.

Good luck a state job. I believe there's a hiring freeze.
