That shot of Baker bathed in moonlight is one of the best photos I've ever seen of this area. Fantastic!

It surprises me that my wife (she grew up here) claims to have never seen the aurora, and numerous people I've spoken with that have lived here their whole lives have never seen them either. I've seen them numerous times back in western NY and figured the opportunity would be better here being further north, yet I have diligently looked when the conditions are right and had no success. Quite odd. I thought maybe the topography hindered viewing low elevation northern lights and you'd have to drive to the end of 542 to see them, but as your experience shows, maybe not.

Its a shame. I distinctly recall two spectacular northern lights events back home that actually lit the ground and were spellbinding displays of dancing light directly above our heads.

I would love to see them, but it just wasn't happening this time. The moon was extremely bright, and shortly after it rose some patchy clouds moved in (and were lit brightly by the moon), so maybe it wasn't dark enough. Coming back down the mountain, we noticed a faint, vertical smudge near the moon which we first thought might be the aurora, but after looking for a minute we decided it was probably also a cloud. Oh well. Still an awesome night and amazing view!

Lamplight, Big fan of your work here. Lurker mostly until now. So what is going on in that last shot with the lightning along the ground?

I want to know about that lightning going along the ground in that last shot, too, Lamplight. Is it just the exposure time that caused a regular streetlamp series to just look like it's lightning? AAMOF-that's a funky place for a street, eh?

Thanks guys! That funky light is actually a person walking down a trail with a flashlight. There were TONS of people up there hoping to see the aurora, so I got a lot of shots with light streaks like this. I thought it made the photo a bit more interesting.

I had the day off and planned to bike to Lummi island, but the weather didn't cooperate. However, clouds and drizzle are perfect weather for a walk in the woods, so that's what I did.
