we'll be visiting the Puget Sound area this summer & I'd like to plan a day at the beach.

I'd like to stay north of Seattle
I'd like a "pebbly/rocky" beach with lots of beach-combing opportunites for the kids.

Recommendations?

Pebbly-rocky is easy to find and there are several. I'm not sure how far you want to go, but here's a run-down:

If you want a little hike (1.5 miles each way, down hill and back), one of my favorites is Meadowdale Beach Park (http://http://www1.co.snohomish.wa.us/Departments/Parks/Park_Information/Park_Directory/Regional_Parks/Meadowdale.htm - broken link) in north Lynnwood. It's a very long beach area, with bathrooms and water, but no other services. The hike meanders through a ravine that contains the remains of old-growth forest. You can see some big stumps, with the notches the old loggers used to cut to stand on, like in this picture: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ing_oregon.jpg
http://http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/Logging_oregon.jpg (broken link)

If you don't want the hike, you can also reach a nice, but smaller beach at Picnic Point. One of the benefits of Picnic Point is that there is very little walk between the parking lot and the beach. You have to cross railroad tracks to access most beaches in this part of WA, and sometimes that requires a raised walkway with lots of stairs.

Continuing north, there is a nice beach at the Mukilteo Lighthouse Park, near the ferry dock. There are walk up fish bars and ice cream, there, and lovely views of the ferries coming and going. It's more civilized. Easy access. And, as the name suggests, a small, historic lighthouse.

Further up, Howarth Park is a great park and long beach area in Everett. The upper level has a play area and large fields, and the lower area has beach access.

Kayak Point (http://www1.co.snohomish.wa.us/Departments/Parks/Park_Information/Park_Directory/Regional_Parks/KayakPointPark_30-Oct-2009_09-28-16.htm - broken link)is west of Marysville. It's also a large, rocky beach.

Lastly, Deception Pass State Park is about an hour-ish north of Seattle and very lovely, very picturesque and rocky with lots to explore and climb around. One of the gems of this region.

Go to Richmond Beach in Shoreline. They remodeled the park attached to it and its beautiful, fun for kids. There is great trails above the beach and great parking to access the beach. Its usually not crowded and you can walk north all the way into town and back.

Deception Pass, on the north side of the bridge. There are good tidepools on the north side of Rosario Head.

Richmond Beach is what I was going to suggest too. The kids will probably like the trains too.
