My least favorite weather is are cool/cloudy/damp weather. I just moved away from the Central California coast. I hated the always cool/foggy/damp feel to the central California coast. It never felt warm, it really wasn’t so much that May Gray/June Gloom stuff, but I wanted a real summer with days on end with temps in the 80's F. Also being a beach person I hated the fact that the Pacific was freeeeezing (60 – 65 F in midsummer).

My favorite weather is in the Caribbean – hot/humid/sunny.

I have since moved to the East Coast (Virginia Beach), and the summers are awesome, many days in the 80’s and even a few 90’s, warm Atlantic waters near 80 F and very sunny. I think I will end up in Florida someday though.

The earth is farther from the sun in the Northern Hemisphere summer, which is the Southern Hemisphere winter. The day the earth is closest to the sun is January 4.

I don't see a contradiction. As nei pointed out, the Earth is closest to the Sun during southern hemisphere summer/northern hemisphere winter. During "our" summer (in the U.S.), the Sun is farther away but the rays are more direct (from the definition of summer). Makes sense?

??????????

Now you say it is closer in winter?

I'm confused.

Ok, now I get it.

Depends upon which hemisphere ?

Note the earth at its farthest point is 1.016 times the average sun - earth value while at its closest point is 0.983. As the amount of light is proportional to the square of the distance, all things being equal the southern hemisphere gets 7% more light at the peak of summer than northern hemisphere does during its summer. However, when the earth is closer to the sun it moves faster, so the summer is a bit shorter in the southern hemisphere than the northern hemisphere. The shorter summer effect very nearly cancels the effects of the brighter summer sun, giving both hemispheres about equal summer sunlight.

Least favorite: heat, especially when combined with intense sunshine, even without humidity it feels really miserable
Favorite: cool and fresh, not freezing cold, but I still deal with it much better than with heat
