There was a frost at work (5 km from home) this morning. It has been a mild winter though, with no frosts on the lawn and the potatoes survived the winter unscathed. During May 2009 we had 25 ground frosts! When I was a kid we had major frost damage to the crop on the tobacco farm where we lived, which was 25 km inland. That was mid Feb! In our region (Nelson) frosts can occur any time between April to November.
Apparently Philadelphia may drop to 39F tonight, doubt they'd see frost but it's still the 30's. We're going into the low-40's which would be the coldest it's been in 5-6 months. Still no frost yet.
Can't wait till it goes back into the 70's with lows in the 60's next week.
We did have a frost yesterday morning but I'd have guessed 25 was even on the higher side these last 20 years. One thing I've noticed since I moved here from Yorkshire is that the temperatures don't fall away anywhere near as much, particularly on hot summer evenings. On a hot 30C summer day here, the 9pm temp will generally still be about 26. Back home on our much rarer 30C days, the 9pm temp might be about 21 or 22. I don't really like much the damp cold we get but do love snow/ice, and I'm not expecting to see snow last more than two days or frozen canals/ice days much this winter.
Interesting I would have expected 2-3x more frosts from the lows. Maybe I had assumed a much higher temperature spread than London has. For example, our average low was 40F so far this month and had about 5 frosts so far this month.
