BOM have Sydney data going back to the mid 19th Century on a daily basis, but sunshine data has only been available since 1 Jan 1955.

It has been available from two sites - Observatory Hill and the Airport. More recent data is taken from the Airport site although I've been informed they are "fairly similar".

Combining the two sources into one series of data, and starting at 1955, the lowest sunshine totals were as follows:

1963: 2,074 hours
1955: 2,130 hours
1967: 2,145 hours
1992: 2,325 hours
1959: 2,327 hours

While I am on the subject, the top 5 years were:

2005: 2,809 hours
2004: 2,791 hours
1986: 2,788 hours
1980: 2,780 hours
1994: 2,756 hours

So in the last 55 years, we have never dipped below 2,000 hours

I get the impression there is not that much sunshine data available for US sites?

Also would I be right in saying that NYC has a similar, or slightly higher mean annual sunshine total as Sydney? Using my data, Sydney averages 2,511 hours.

That sounds about right, 58% of possible sunshine. I live relatively close to NYC, although based on wavehunter's maps, I think my area is slightly cloudier.

For some reason it is difficult to get sunshine data in the US.

I'd really like to know sunshine stats as well. They should collect the information daily right? (Or else how'd they get the averages )?

. Lowest yearly total, at the old city site, is 2008 hours in 1950, including 81 hours in June and 74 hours for July.

1950 was quite exceptional for it's prolonged, at times, wet periods with June and July rain records being broken which still stands today.

The current (airport since 1976) average stands at 2624 hours. Currently at 2257 hours and the cloudiest since 1999 (2499 hrs) which's about time if you ask me!

Also in addition, sunshine were recorded in the city (Observatory Hill) from 1931 to 1992 and at the airport from 1976. From data supplied by BOM, for the city site, the sunniest year was in 1986 with 2787 hours, against the average of 2468 hours. For the airport site, current cloudiest year is 2360 hours in 1992 and sunniest 1980 with 2895 hours.
