I haven't seen all the data but there were some really big contrasts within the metropolitan area. Below -10C in many places.
Well, perhaps the 215 year old record will be broken in January if this trend continues.

For some reason, I though the coldest temperature recorded in London was 14F (-10C). Perhaps that was from a station that didn't go back as many years.

London's record low is -12C recorded in December 1981, which is 10F. It is currently 1C/34F at 6pm. Overnight low was -9C/16F. Probably the coldest night since 1981. The average low for December is 4C.

In a normal winter the very coldest nights will struggle to get below -4 or -5C.

Long range forecasts suggest a return to normal conditions for January and February, so we will finally see days above 10C/50F. This December hasn't seen a single one, when we should see 10-15 days. January gets 11 days above 10C and February around 10-15 also.

Hmm. Any clue what's with the -6°F record low Wikipedia reported.

I'd like to know if warmer weather is forecast for where I live. It's been somewhat below average.

Yea, the remember London having 10°C + days in the winter fairly often. I think that was what I liked about London winters. Felt a break from cold...

I found this article which mentions the -21C in London in 1795 and 1796 but I highly doubt the equipment/exposure etc would meet modern standards, and also the heat island would have been much less a factor. I don't know where in London the temperatures were taken then either as the longest-running weather station still going is at Hampstead (the one I quote as it's the nearest to me) which has only been going since 1909. It was undoubtedly colder then than now overall, but I personally wouldn't trust individual temperatures from before 1850 or so. The article also doesn't seem that professionally written either and is mostly anecdotal.

The History of British Winters - Netweather.tv

As far as I am concerned so long as my train back up north on Thursday and back down again on the 29th are still running (it's quite possible that they won't) we can have however much snow and cold we need until New Year to set a bunch of records I'll never see broken, and then I'd be quite happy for it to be 10-12C every day because the insulation in my flat just wasn't designed for cold like this and we've had all sorts of transport/infrastructure/distribution problems which we can do without really. I've been quite lucky in that I live so close to work I could walk it if I had to and I've been spared the horror stories I've heard about from some people. It's certainly been interesting times though for a weather nut.

Just walked past one of my outdoor temperature sensor consoles, quick glance noticed it was -9.3°C outside, what's frightning is that I'm getting used to seeing these crazy-low temps outside, as if it's normal!!!!!

So far this season, we have had a total of 8 inches of snow in my area of metro-Detroit. There is about 5" on the ground, it has been cold but quiet this past week.

Should be interesting to see whether that storm this weekend and early next week will track closer to the coast or farther. At this point I'll be happy with a few snow showers.

What is really interesting though is the potential for snow in parts of the south this weekend. Perhaps another snow event for Myrtle Beach?

I'm in Long Island right now and I see 50% chance of snow for Sunday. So probably not much? And then it'll warm up a bit by the middle of next week so any accumulation will melt.

I've noticed whenever England has a cold snap it's accompanied by snow while here we can have a long stretch of cold with no snow. Is that accurate? Almost sounds like the Great Lakes to me.
