Is anyone else tired of hearing this? I keep reading it on these forums "It's so cold, and it's not even winter yet!" Really? Mid-December dosen't count as winter? Just because "astronomical winter" doesn't start until December 21st does not mean that "actual" winter does not start way before. I would say winter actually starts sometime between the last week of November and the first week of December. By Dec 21st I think we are well into winter already.
Saying winter starts on Dec 21 is simply stupid. The coldest months of the year are December, January and February while the darkest are November, December and January; thus, January should be considered mid-winter, which is true by meteorological standards. I never understood the astronomical criteria leading to consider Dec 21 as the beginning of winter. Based on daylight, Dec 21 should be the mid-point of winter, which is the case for example in Chinese calendar.
In the northern hemisphere, mid-March is much brighter and (in 99% of climates) much warmer than Dec 21.
Therefore I totally agree with you !
