The entire USA east of Chicago and St. Louis is now an island, and not part of the mainland, since 1848, when they completed the Illinois and Michigan Canal and the Chicago Ship and Sanitary Canal. Lake Michigan water now flows "up" the Chicago River, into the Des Plaines and Illinois Rivers, to the MIssissippi and out into the Gulf of Mexico. Lake Michigan water also flows over Niagara Falls and down the St. Lawrence, into the Atlantic Ocean. So its a big island.
