It depends where... but generally Chilean cities are colder in winter.. cities like Porto Alegre in Southern Brazil are humid subtropical while most cities in Chile have cool summers and mild to cool winters due to the cold Humboldt current.

Chile for sure. They have Andes, and latitudes near antartic circle, there's no doubt about that.

I can't tell you exactly but, I heard a long time ago that Chile's lows drops to -35C near peaks and mountain ridges, ours rarely go beyond -10C. Besides that, coldwaves comes to Chile the first.

About average, our coldest city São Joaquim, located at 1600m high, sets highs in 60F and lows in 40F in July, that's same average as recorded at Chile's southern coastal cities.

The coldest city in all of Brazil only has a daytime high of 60F during the winter season ?

Sao Joaquim's "winters" would be considered spring or fall weather in most of North America and Europe.

Yeah, that's true. But as we're talking about winter, values can change drastically, even with highs average in 60F. In July 2000, higs dropped to 28F, and low record was 12F in 1955. Usually it comes to low 20's every winter.

Today's low in São Joaquim was 38F and right now, 2pm it's only 42F. It's truly like an American place, isn't?

It still sounds quite subtropical when compared to most of North America, probably similar to Northern Florida/Southern Georgia.

Yeah 42F at only 2pm in the afternoon does feel like a typical average American winter. But by Brazilian standards that's chilling to the bone cold because most places in Brazil have average daytime highs in the 70s and 80s during it's so-called "winter" season.

And it's expected to get worse. Low in the next night may set 24F. It'll be 2011 lowest temp. in Brazil. But as we are in Brazil, highs can't keep themselves under 50F for a long time. High in São Joaquim will rise up to 53F.

24F is below freezing, is there a chance of snow the next night in Sao Joaquim ?
