Both desert climates, one with almost static seasonal variation but high diurnal variation; one with drastic seasonal variation but more moderate diurnal variation.
Which one would you pick?
I'll be interested to see the votes...
For me I'd go for Calama for greater livability, despite of the cold nights.
I'll go for Turpan for having the extreme seasonal variation which would make the climate more interesting, although it is still very boring to me because of the lack of rainfall. The complete absence of warm nights in Calama would probably drive me crazy as well.
Calama by far... Actually a pretty good desert climate... Summer temperatures are still a bit too warm, but for a desert climate it's still pretty comfortable, especially since it's combined with that low night-time temperatures. Turpan has 6 good months (Oct-Mar), but the rest is just horrible. And since their is no real snow, I can't really enjoy the colder winter-temperatures compared to Calama. Additionally, Calama has a little more precipitation, which is also an advantage.

No it doesn't - 5.7mm/year at Calama! Nowhere in Asia is as dry as the Atacama hyperdesert. Turpan appears to be around the 15mm mark.
Turpan's a really weird climate -- I can't think of any other climate that combines such cold winters with such hot summers.
I would go with Calama for the year-round pleasant afternoon temps. Even though they have cold nights all year you're virtually guaranteed an enjoyable afternoon 365 days per year.

Plus a lot of sun - welcome sign used to say "Ciudad de sol y cobre". And the UV is stronger than one might think - I was there on a couple of April days and the sun's power had to be respected.
