Five months have mean temps under 0 C (32 F). That's really cold compared to even most of the northern USA. Summers are ok, and would be warm and sunny in this region most of the time. However, some of the coldest weather in winter in the USA occurs in this region...lows can go down to - 50 F. That type of cold is too much.
C-/D+. Grand Forks winters make even Minneapolis look mild. Temperature readings probably don't tell the whole story as the open prairie makes for terrible wind chills.
I checked the statistics and I would say that the coldest months for me would be December through February. Nights in November are chilly and March can still be a little on the cool side but I'd manage. Other than a few months in the winter, this climate is fantastic. I'd give this one a solid B+. I guess I underestimated North Dakota a bit. I would guess that while ND is cold, Minnesota may be worse am I right?
A-. Would be an A+ if summers were cooler and winters snowier.
