A polar blast has hit New Zealand, bringing freezing temperatures and the heaviest snowfall in 40 years.

Snow is even predicted to fall on the hills around Auckland in what meteorologists are describing as a once-in-a-lifetime storm.

Snow has also fallen in Wanganui on the North Island for the first time since about 1974

A low-pressure system is deepening to New Zealand's south-east and has combined with a large high to the west to pull a polar air mass unusually far north over the nation, Josh Fisher, senior meteorologist with Weatherzone, said.

After last month's snowfall I certainly wasn't expecting any more! We've mainly had a lot of hail intermittantly, but the biggest snowfalls are expected overnight.

Snow has fallen on downtown Auckland for the first time since 1939 and the second time in recorded history today (15th).

While the USA bakes in record heat…this is turning out to be one heck of a winter in the southern Hemisphere.

There seems to be a great deal of extremes in the pattern this year world wide.

The cloudy skies prevent temps from getting too low overnight. But the daytime highs are very low -- Christchurch had a high of 4.6 C yesterday and isn't forecasted to get into double digits for another week.

It doesn't look like we got anymore snow overnight. Many forecasters had predicted we might be getting over a foot of snow, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

To cold sufferers, I feel your pain...
but at the same time this is probably rather fascinating to most people.

You can have it;
I've been cold/too-cold since yesterday afternoon from conditions like

11 C/52 F with a 20 knot wind (25mph/40km/h?) at 3pm
9 C/48 F with a 17 knot wind at 9pm, just walking to and from my car
(fortunately, this is about as bad as it gets here )

At least New Zealand can look forward to spring.

Here in Alberta we've had our first taste of fall. Temperatures in many regions below 13C (55F) this afternoon and risk of frost in areas north and west of Calgary tonight.
