I got mild to moderate shaking here. I felt like I was being gently rocked in my seat. I knew it had to have been at least a 5 since I know what a 5.0 feels like when I unexpectedly felt one in Puerto Rico 2 years ago.

We had earthquake here in D.C. too. I was at school at the orientation for new students with disabilities and I was wondering why my interpreter was signing funny when suddenly the ground shook and we both realized it was something else. At first I thought a crane from construction had fallen on our building or something. Then the director of the program told us to evacuate the building and my interpreter told me all the buildings were evacuated, at which point I realized it was something bigger. (In retrospect, I realize I had heard the earthquake but had just chocked it up to regular campus construction. It seems our campus is always under construction, and at a school for the deaf, being unfazed by loud noises is a part of life.) We stood for about an hour because they wouldn't let us go home and they wouldn't let us into the dorms/other buildings. Eventually, my other interpreter dropped me off at the metro. He dropped me off at the opposite side from the one I'm accustomed to so I ended up getting on the train in the wrong direction. It only occurred to me when I realized my phone still had service and so I asked someone on the metro and they told me we were heading in the MD direction. The metro was crawling at 15 mph today and stopping erratically so I couldn't really count the stops and didn't hear any announcements. Nervous about aftershocks, I decided to get off early on the way back and when I got off I realized there was zero pattern to the traffic. A woman nearby told me that the traffic lights were out so she guided me to a part of the city where the lights were up and running. I eventually got home 3 hours later to my dog who was a nervous wreck. Nothing in the house is broken that I can tell though a wall-piece did fall into the kitchen sink.

I've never heard of the east coast getting an earthquake - how rare are they in that part of the country? We never get anything above about a 3 or 4 here, but I was only a few miles from a 3.something a few years ago, which just felt like a lorry going past or something. I've never felt a 'proper' earthquake.

I was a few miles away from the epicenter of a 5.2 earthquake here in the UK in February 2008. It was our first of that size since 1200 or so apparently.

One of our local news stations reported last night that the last time a quake of this size occurred in Virginia was 114 years ago.. in 1897. That would explain why some life-time residents here in VA don't remember one.

I was walking down the street and so wasn't paying attention, and missed it. Apparently, others here noticed it though.

Apparently some said that it felt longer/stronger than the 5.0 earthquake in eastern Ontario (also felt in the eastern US) last June, which I did feel then as I was indoors.

I was about 45 +/- miles from the epicenter.....Earth shook violently for 40 seconds......At the office, stuff flew off the shelves, kitchen had broken dishes and coffee pots. Area damage was anywere from condemed apartment buildings to steeples unseated to one town declaring a state of emergency. Four rounds of aftershocks.

Tonight they say Irene is headed up the coast and we are in the bulls-eye for high alert.

Wonder what winter's going to be like.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 occurred in 1931. The one in 2008 was the strongest since 1984

Dang! Some people just don't have any luck. Don't forget you've got a hurricane bearing down as well.

Hope no one was hurt in this one and that property damage was minimal or non existant.
