Does anybody else out there have information about rain duration alongside precipitation/sunshine totals? I've been looking through the archives for my local (unofficial) site for the past few years and though I can't find an actual average the wettest month in recent years in terms of amounts and duration was November 2009, which saw 144mm fall over 103 hours (so basically, an average of 3.5 hours of rain falling every single day - and most of the rest of the country will have been considerably worse) with 71 sun hours. The driest month was April 2011 which saw just 1.8mm fall over 4 hours of rainfall with 216 hours of sunshine. The worst single day I could find for rain duration was 22nd November 2003 which saw 23 wet hours, and unsurprisingly no sunshine.
A brief summary:
2009: 680mm over 499 hours, 1555 hours sun
2010: 594mm over 503 hours, 1434 hours sun
2011 (data available until end of July): 295mm over 241 hours, 987 hours sun
What's really noticeable is how many hours there are when it's neither sunny nor raining. I have no way of knowing whether the rain recorded fell during the day or not, but assuming half of it fell during daylight hours and half at night (in my location there are apparently 4038 possible hours of sun) that leaves over half the time dry but dull. Anybody got anything to compare it with? I strongly suspect some of the Scottish locations (and perhaps Buxton?) will have more hours of rain/snowfall than sunshine.
