B - Little snow. The rains not to bad. Plus it has decent summers. Where I'm at Moncton eastern Canada there's actually a bit less sunshine than Portland. I just wich the winters were a bit warmer and summers hotter and longer.
Nelson looks beautiful! And if it had avg temps in the 85F range in summer would be paradise to me. Winter looks perfect with highs in the 50's.
Sunshine hours over 2400 is very good for NZ correct?
Yes, Nelson and Blenheim and Motueka all have a longterm average around 2450 although these could edge up close to 2500. No other towns exceed about 2325-2350. Nowhere in NZ has average midsummer highs above about 25C/77F, and Nelson is below that. Very pleasant though for non-hyperheat people.
It's hard to know what Portland's hours are. A quick goggle search showed 2155 hours, and 2345 hours on a few sites. Going with the later means there is about a 100 hour difference to here (approx 2450 hours), so not a big difference.
There is only a small variation in monthly sunshine percentages here compared to Portland. I don't wish for high sun hours during the hottest part of the year here, with UVI topping out at 13-14 and an average of around 10- 11. It's only at 7 - 9 at present, so no need to reach for the sunblock just yet.
I don't believe the 2345. Only 48% of astro. possible is well short of that. 2155 sounds about right, 300 hours below your territory's values!

As commented on in older threads, Nelson/Motueka (& Blenheim) have a fairly small annual range of % sunshine - For Nelson's monthly values the range is about 55-56 to 62.

Oops I meant average daily "high" temps in the 85F range, not the avg of the high and low. That would be too hot for me! But 77F for daily highs in summer is not too shabby considering oceanic climate. Much of NZ looks stunning to me with snow capped mountains and beautiful beaches. What would be the avg sea temps around NZ in your summer? NZ is def on my list of places I want to see.

Around here the sea is only in the upper 50s during summer. The northernmost parts of the country would have SSTs maxing out at 70 F. So very California-like on the whole.

Here is a link to a map. The warmest part of the summer sees a sea temperature of 19.6C/68F for this region. The popular beaches and estuaries can see water temps at between 18-25C+/64-77F+ during summer, temps can vary from day to day.Sea-surface temperatures - Coastal fish - Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand

Horrid, horrid, grey/dreary/drizzly winters. OTOH, summers don't look too bad. It seems like a nice place for a summer vacation home, but that's about it. Similar cloudy climate to my hometown-- Scranton, PA. According to the climate data on Wikipedia, Portland, OR receives 2300+ sunshine hours whereas Scranton receives less than 2300. However, for the NOAA annual % of sunshine, Portland is at 48% and Scranton (Avoca) at 51%. This is a very subjective poll so others may not agree. For me personally, less than 55% of the annual possible sunshine is a D and F for polling purposes. Yeah, summers are pretty livable. But it's definitely not worth it if over half the year is overcast, IMO. From what I hear, the Pacific NW experiences a low gloomy cloud ceiling. Now that's what I call soul crushing!
