I bet the fishing industry in Kerguelen could easily rival that in Iceland if there were enough fishermen/women there.
But the islands are tiny; it's probably harder to be self-supporting when it's that small.

Back in the 10th century? No, of course not. Even in the early 18th century, not really. Iceland has been one of the most 'civilised' nations for hundreds and thousands of years, with close proximity to other very civilised nations which have been the most civilised nations on earth for thousands of years..

Both climates are too grim for my taste, no real summer - but Reykjavik is slightly more interesting.

Give me Reykjavik's extra rain and less sunshine any day of the week, although both climates are very likable.

300 hours of extra sunshine is still precious to me, so Port-aux-Francais.

Reykjavík is Subpolar while Port-aux-Français is Polar.

Port-aux-Français can't even support forests.

so no competition, Reykjavík wins.

Neither one is worth the price of a deck with 51 cards but I would choose Reykjavik for amenities that have nothing to do with climate.
