Its been pleasingly snow and ice free. But instead we've had pretty much non stop gales since the beginning of December, so its still felt cold.

Has it really felt that way to you (presumably as a lifelong/long-term SE resident)? For me, having lived up north and in Wales and who likes the spectacle of gales and driving rain if not the everyday experience of it the wind the past few weeks has just been a reminder of how down here we can only get the occasional day of wild-ish weather and how it can't keep going for weeks on end like some parts of the country.

This explains our warm winter.

Dr. Jeff Masters' WunderBlog : Remarkably dry and warm winter due to record extreme jet stream configuration : Weather Underground

Looks like it's another unusual oscillation / jet stream pattern like last winter just with a different effect.

His prediction:

We will (finally!) get the first major storm of 2012 in the U.S. early next week, when a low pressure system will develop over Texas and spread heavy rains of 1 - 3" along a swath from Eastern Texas to New England during the week. This storm will pull in a shot of cold air behind it late in the week, giving near-normal January temperatures to much of the country, and some snow to northern New England. Beyond that, it is difficult to tell what the rest of winter may hold, since the AO is difficult to predict more than a week or two in advance.

Enjoy while it lasts!

It's been in the 70s in Houston for the past few days with only a few light and short lived freezes (downtown probably hasn't dropped below 32*F) so far this winter. Much better then the last two winters Houston winters aren't subarctic after all, the past two winters were just too cold.

Well, I know farmers are going to choose the sad option.

Me, I'll take 40s and no snow over summer anyday. But this type of weather can have consequences in the future.

KDLT.com South Dakota News - Farmers Have Mixed Feelings About Warm Winter

"While South Dakota in January usually is covered with a layer of snow, warm temperatures have left corn and soybean fields thawed and bare.

“If we don’t start getting some snow or rain, we're in deep trouble,” said Willis Lienart, a farmer worried about his crop yields this year.

“We may have to cut back on population. This is not a good scenario,” said Lienart.

Dry fields this winter has farmers hoping for some frozen precipitation.

“It takes 1-foot of snow to make 1-inch of moisture. But, we don’t have any moisture,” said Lienart.
