True, it looks like the cold blast will not last

However, the 12 F high for Minot is almost 8 F BELOW normal. The normal Jan high at Minot NWS is 19.4 F. The lows in the same area should plunge to -10 to -15 below. So the upper Midwest/High Plains should see at least a good 3 days of below normal temps.

Mean daily temps will start their slow rise after January 26th or so at most NWS stations. So who knows - this might be the coldest air of the winter for the Upper Midwest.

Being in the western part of North Dakota makes Minot a bit warmer than the eastern side of the state. Grand Forks has the coldest winters of any metro area in the lower 48 states and Langdon North Dakota has the coldest winters of any town in the lower 48. There looks to be another cool snap coming early next week to the areas along the Canadian border in the midwest but still pretty weak as this forecast for Langdon below shows. This has been a disappointing winter so far.
