I litterally can't keep up with the news from out there.

Here's a video of Romania villages litterally buried in snow. They are living in their homes which are now caves under the snow!

Even Italy villages buried in 9 feet of snow.

Whats even more insane... this video shows the location is the same Latitude as upstate NY and south of Burlington Vermont.

Mid afternoon temperatures in Eastern England of around -5 to -8c, that's about as cold as you can get without freezing fog in that part of the world.

Coningsby (East Midlands) looks the coldest at 2pm at -6.3C after earlier fog seems to have lifted. I don't know if they are meant to stay clear overnight but it could get impressively cold if they do. That part of the country got a few highs below -5C in December 2010 but still, it's not the kind of thing that happens very often!

Met Office: UK: Latest observations

Look at those temps in the Shetland Islands! Impressive contrast.

And with a NW wind. For us, a NW wind usually brings the coldest winter weather.

Coningsby recorded -13°C this morning

Yes, Mildenhall was -6.0c at 2pm and Lakenheath -6.7c. Neither are met office stations, but both are WMO registered (like a lot of commercial airports eg Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, Heathrow, although i believe Heathrow is WMO and UKMetOffice registered)

What's the official status of the Chesham site then? It's meant to be a private, non-standard site but seems to get reported in some media as though it was official even though it gets suspiciously low temperatures. I've never understood either why quite obscure places are included on the Met Office list but some of the major cities are not.

Chesham is private, not official.. I'll find the link to the site, but I agree its temperatures appear suspicious and nowhere else near this area gets as low, not even Benson, and Chesham is so close to London. But then again, I always wonder how certain places that are not frost hollows fall so low while other places with the same geography stay milder.. our overnight temperature was weak compared to some areas further south and east despite being clear and with snow.. this country is so odd when it comes to the weather

By the way, I don't think -6C will be the high at that site, it's due to get milder later tonight.. shame cause if the skies stayed clear I am sure it'd be even colder
