Which would you choose?

Christchurch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Portland, Oregon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I think I'd go for Christchurch.. warmer winters with less extreme cold

Portland, but only just. More chance of snow in winter is the dealbreaker. Summers are great barring the odd heatwave- normally I'd say too sunny but one needs it after all that gloom in the cool season. Christchurch is cooler in summer but can get the odd scorcher as well.

If you add in the earthquake risk, Portland wins comfortably. Although quakes presumably happen in the PNW, I imagine the risk is significantly less than California. Mount Saint Helens was the most significant geological disaster in the region.

Portland for the cooler and stormier winters.

I prefer Portland, just slightly cooler than Christchurch in winter, but that also increases the chance of snowfall. Also the summers are consistently warmer.

As usual, Wikipedia sun hours are wrong. My US tables give it 48% of possible, making a total of about 2130, almost identical with Christchurch. Mean annual temps. are almost equal, Ch'ch is considerably drier. Ch'ch by a nose.

Portland on the assumption that thunderstorms are a bit more likely here than Christchurch...and more snow/cold...and MUCH warmer summers (although Ch'ch's record high of 107F is very impressive).

Both are mediocre climates though.

Christchurch's cooler summers are perfect! I don't want hotter summers just so I can see a dusting of snow a few more times per year...

Portland, just, though I'd be content with either.

Christchurch. I had thought Portland would be the choice for me, but looking at winter sunshine hours and rain day totals for Portland steered me towards Chch. I like Portland's summer though.
