Basically we had a VERY VERY HOT first half of february (actually, first 20 days to be honest, since february the 19th was the hottest day of february with 34.7 c )and if temps had continue that way, we probably have had the hottest febraury ever, but temps drop DRASTICALLY since february 20 and the last 10 days of february were WONDERFUL, and way cooler than average with maxs around 25 celsius and nights in the 18/19 celsius. It was the first time in the summer we had several days with cool temps....so much that im getting used to it! Today is March the 1st and we are having a 25 celsius sunny cold breeze day....is this wonderful or what? I know the heat will return and everything will be ugly again but, man, i am enjoying this!

Overall i think temps for this february have been average, cause the first half was above average but the second half was below average so i think it even out (?) but probably someone that knows more about weather (like sanfel or malraver) will have the exact data about this.

Another thing about february: it was way wetter than January (it rained A LOT) it was more humid (ick) more cloudy, more unstable...basically it had it all: thunderstorms, rain, humidity, hot humid singapore-like days with very high minimums and 30 c nights and thunderstorms that didnt cool down the city at all, cloudy sticky days but also breezy cool sunny days in the end. February was WAAAY WAAAAAY less monotonous than January (that was basically a sunny 33 celsius day repetead for 31 days) and we ve had about everything this month. If i had to chose, i will chose february as a more tolerable month than January, even if the hottests days of the summer and the more sticky ones were in february, because at least we had rain and mostly because the last 10 days of february was the best weather we ve had since early november.
The mean temperature was 24.5ºC/76ºF (31ºC max - 19.7ºC min), 0.8ºC above average of 1981-1990 period. This was the 17th warmest february on record, tied with 1906.
The courius data is the precipitation. The month ends with 240mm of precipitation (117mm more than average). wich was more than last agoust to january combined (238mm). What a change there!. Definitively, La Niña is gone.

wow! it certainly been rainy, but more than august till january combined? that seems like a lot ! (though its also true it rained very little those months cause of la niña)

so, it seems that wunderground weather is a bit off since what i posted is about 1 celsius less hot than what you say. Im not surprised, i dont fully trust wunderground, and i trust your stats and sanfels that come from the SMN.

Im thinking, if temperature of february was 1 celsius ABOVE average even with those last 10 cold days we had, i wonder how hot would have been if weather continued like it was until the 19th?? Probably this would have been the hottest february on average by far!

I was thinking the same. I thought that the latter half of the month would be enough to even out the average temps, but it seems it wasn't.

Well, at least it seems La Niña is gone. Does that mean we are prone to have less warmer-than-average weather? Marlaver must know this, I guess.

Vancouver International Airport
February 2012:

Average maximum: 7.7°C
Average minimum: 2.0°C
Average: 4.8°C
Highest maximum: 12.6°C on February 10th
Lowest maximum: 3.6°C on February 27th
Highest minimum: 7.0°C on February 11th
Lowest minimum: -4.7°C on February 27th
Total number of frosts: 9
Total number of ice days: 0
Total precip: 133mm
Total snowfall: 1.2cm (on February 26th)

Overall, it was a pretty ho-hum month as far as averages go.. both temperatures and precipitation were fairly close to normal. The downtown station as usual was considerably milder due to heat island and only recorded 1 frost for the month with a low of -1.3°C.

Highest precip: 0.51in/13.0mm (29th)

Just like January, the snowfall hasn't too bad; the main problem this winter has been the lack of lying snow.

Cool, wet and cloudy -- another utterly appaling month, but I've become inured to it now. I can't even remember the last month that was average or above average in temps and sunshine (think it may have been June?).

The summer as a whole was probably the worst I've ever experienced. In terms of extreme monthly maxima one would have to go back to at least 1939 to find a cooler summer.

55mm is not "wet" unless you're a desert dweller. The longterm mean for Feb. at the Gardens is 43mm, so not a big deal, and nor is the number of 1mm days (average is 5.2, highest 12).

I assume you're quoting airport data above. I can't be bothered gathering data to test your assertion re extreme maxima. However, when the seasonal summary comes out from NIWA I will check out the average maxima. I don't think I'll have to go back all that many years to find a summer with cooler days.

Even your Feb. sunshine deficit, though very considerable, is dwarfed by some other cases, the worst in relative terms being Blenheim, which at 139 hours was 89 below average and had easily its lowest ever. A number of centres, including mine unfortunately, had their cloudiest ever summer - you didn't. Your seasonal total was about 568 - for the Aero records dating from 1949, 11 values have been lower, the lowest being 490 (the city site 1930-1948 recorded another 5 lower values, including only 456 in 1937-38).

Finally re temperatures, your daily maxima were well down at 1.9C below the normal, milder cloudy nights reducing the mean daily deficit to 0.8C. At Culverden the mean Tmax was 4.0C below the mean.

You have had a run of cooler months since last July, but July, August and September all had well above average sunshine, with November and January a little above.

In short, you've had a crummy season - though I'd warrant the 2001-02 season would be a good competitor in fairly recent times (warmer, but also cloudier and much wetter). Most of NZ has suffered the same fate. Your expectations are too high for your region - possibly based too much on better than average stats. for a considerable part of the period 1984-2009, and I suggest you seriously consider Brisbane.
