'Austerity Rules': Massive job cuts at Bureau of Climate and Weather
Prime Minister Gillyweed embarked on a new round of austerity measures Sunday, aimed at suring up Antarcanadas fiscal future. Of particular concern were the drastic cuts to the Bureau. Up to 150 staff will be surplus to the Government's requirements, said managing director/overlord Bill Frugalscot.
"Antarcanadians are pretty weather savvy. Most workers in Emerald City take both their brolleys and sunglasses each morning from what I see. So who needs up to date forecasts? Furthermore, employers are complaining that their staff are bludging around looking at the radar every chance they get. When we're in a downturn, industry needs these lazy sods firing on all cylinders. This is why a downsize is needed."
The upshot is that detailed forecasts will now be issued on an 'as needed basis', with terse "precis" forecasts issued daily. Mr. Frugalscot again: "Basically, when we have a severe weather event, I think it's in the public interest to notify, well, the public. We'll be keeping a duty forecaster on hand for this purpose."
Employees are naturally outraged, beginning a week long strike today and demanding that the Government review its decision. No forecasts will be issued until the matters are resolved, according to public sector union boss Katrina Orleans.
Breezy, overcast, and cold today with blowing and drifting snow after yesterday's snow storm which dumped over ten inches. The temperature is not expected to reach freezing.
