@ben86: Toronto, originally. I also spent some time in the USA. BTW, I think this particular part of Germany actually might be one of the least sunny regions in the world, if you consider just the months of November through February. In summer (and in total), it's somewhat sunnier than places like Aberdeen or Northern Ireland, but in those four months I think it just may actually almost be on a par with places like the Faroe Islands.

Essen, not far from Dortmund, has 40.3 hours of sun in the cloudiest month and 192.2 hours in the sunniest month and overall 1,459.. so this area of Germany is certainly very cloud.. it's probably cloudier in December and January than here. Overall, sunshine hours in this part of Germany are pretty similar to central and northern England.

I saw a number that supposedly stems form the German national weather bureau (DWD) that says Dortmund has 1370 hours, but I guess it depends on what time period you use as reference. BTW, it gets somewhat worse if you you go a little farther south and east of Dortmund (just my personal experience).

BTW, I live EAST of Dortmund, not west as I mistakenly wrote in an earlier post.

Hmm...aside from an odd sense of humour I stand corrected in my post concerning your views .

It very well might be, at least if you exclude the polar regions (which get 0 hours of sun because the sun never rises in the first place). Roughly, what does that section you mention all the time average in the winter months?

Parts of Scandinavia - admittedly closer to the Arctic Circle - would be very competitive in this regard.

About 190 - 200 hours for the four months starting in November, although I think the numbers I've found might be a little too high. They're not from the German national weather bureau, but rather from a rival commercial outfit. I'm putting November in there because you often get less than 30 hours as early as November. Three years ago we had a grand total of 22 hours in November.

2,511 hours in Tennessee is way too much. My minimum would be 500 hours, my ideal maximum 1500. Anything 1100-1400 or so would be great.

For the last 30 years of its record Campbell Is (at 52.5S) averaged 33 hours for May-July inclusive, about 6% of average.
