Perhaps the Spanish one should be compared Mendoza, Argentina.
Mendoza is sunnier and drier than both, with only 220mm (8 inches)
precip, similiar highs, cooler lows.
Yes it could be a better comparison, but I based my comparison only on their names being identical. I was inspired by the thread Perth vs Perth.

Ah, yes. That one was amusing. I was unaware that the more well-known Perth was the evil twin of a snowy Scottish climate (just kidding, but the Perth one is much superior relative to my climatic requirements).

Checking that site - lots of good numbers. I see (from memory now) 2049 for Rio (hills may cut that back), only 1707 for Sao Paulo.

Others: Buenos Aires 2448
Mar del Plata 1920
El Puyo (Ecuador) 975
Lima 1407
Ushuaia 1338
Brasilia 2334
Montevideo 2790
Cuzco 2313

Lima, Peru (an extreme case), according to Wikipedia has 1284 hours only!

And then there are the others, like Miami, Los Angeles, etc., with very high sunshine hours.

wow, thats a great page,sanfel!

I cant believe Rio sunshine hours are so low!!! A city that is known as a beach touristic destination! Im shocked!
Plus, Florianopolis too. Wow! And only 1707 for Sao Paolo?
I knew that Lima had very low sunshine hours, but those two brazilians cities completely shocked me!

RWood, im kinda glad to see Mar del Plata haves those numbers. Cause in some threads here a while ago it was said Mar del Plata had around 2700 sunshine hours, and, having lived in MDP for 20 years and in Buenos Aires for 8 years i thought i was crazy cause i was SURE Buenos Aires was way sunnier than Mar del Plata. I even ask my bf (who also was born in MDP and now lives here), what city he thought was sunny after living in both of them and he said "definetely BA, by far!". So, it seemed really weird to me than MDP supposedly had more sunshine hours than BA....that doesnt make sense if you lived in both cities. Actually, in MDP to get 7 or 10 straight days of sun in summer vacations is a lotery while in Buenos Aires....well, just look at october/november/january stats, with entire months with almost complete sunshine. Completely different story.

Those 1900 hours for MDP and almost 2500 for BA make so much more sense, so thanks!

MDP is cloudier than I thought, quite a surprise.

Rio's total may be partly due the significant hills bordering the main part of the city. Brasilia is much better at 2334, similarly Vitoria, Porto Alegre and Salvador.

I'm also quite surprised at those low sunshine hours... São Paulo getting less sunshine than Vancouver was especially quite a shocker for me...

Anyways, i used a calculator to add up all those numbers you presented and the result was 2334 hours, not 1800. If thats true, is certainly not as sunny as i thought, but its also not cloudy as 1800!!! That sunshine hours sound considerably low, specially knowing where Salta is located (in an extremely sunny zone in the country, maybe the sunniest?)

also add the San Juan sunshine hours and it gave me 3347, I wonder how much hours cafayate haves.
Actually, no. Salta it's located into the Calchaqui's valley, where east humid winds are obstaculized by the Andes and then, ascend cooling and generating clouds instantly over the city.
In contrast, Cafayate is in the middle of the Puna in the Andes, which block any posibility of humid air from Brazil and the tropics. It's the phenomen called as a "rain shadow"

Here a graphics to explain it better:

And an article of the "rain shadow" effect: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rain_shadow
