The fridgid air has just crossed over the border into Minnesota. Temps are near 0 there at 2pm in the afternoon. Also reports of snow and ice down south..

Winter is returning to the U.S especially for the East and South this time. Notice the Deep trough which is now shifting to center of country. Parts of California having 30yr cold there. Denver was so cold even the football players were cold last night!

Here's the link to the OBS reports down south. Notice its snowing in spots.

I arrived to a snowstorm in Kelowna last Tuesday and it snowed here last night. Also been quite cold with temperatures down to 0 F/-17 C.

Thankfully it looks like I'll be missing the "January thaw" that's been occurring back in NJ.

Looks like a pretty good shot of cold air coming south into the N Plains/Upper Midwest early next week. Grand Forks ND (where I work) should have a good shot of -20s (F) at night Mon or Tues as large enough high to give us clear sky. Lack of a deep snowpack does work against it though in some of our area....though areas along the ND/Canadian border have 12 to 18 inches and should be fine.
