You'll still be running behind Tekapo, but we won't mention the other location with its "optimistic" numbers. BTW your newspaper may still be using old averages (1971-2000) unless the Met. piece specifically says otherwise.

Edit: Having looked at your paper online, its average quoted for Nelson doesn't match any of the 30-year periods. The latest normals (1981-2010) are 2472 for Nelson and 2459 for Blenheim.

101 hours to the 20th averaging 5 hours a day.. meant to say 19th in my previous post. Today will be our last sunny day for a few days. This month is already sunnier than June though by a large margin, which is amazing considering the days in June are very long and the sun doesn't rise now until near 8am!

130 hours to the 20th. About average, marginally higher. October is one of the cloudier months here along with Nov & Dec.

That's impressive, but can you find an instance in the UK when the sun in the month with least daylight (Dec) outscored June? That's probably an unfair criterion given your latitudes, so say November vs. May? There is a case in NZ where a location scored 100 more hours in June than in the following December - the possible totals were about 235 and 450.

Now beaten June, probably for the first time ever.

196.1 hours to the 21st. Bear in mind we have a missing data day so it would be even higher (I cannot remember the weather on that day, but likely to have been sunny).

We may even get close to the 300 hour mark given it is a 31 day month! Here is our 7 day forecast:
