Most of our sun was recorded on the first 6 days of November. Sun virtually refused to show up from then on, while in London the gloom has been interspersed with some rather sunny days. I guess we had more stagnant air from high pressure areas and more low altitude humidity. Meteociel - Climatologie mensuelle de Orly
Wow, 1.2 hours of sun during 12 whole days, and very little sun in the forecast for the next few days! I don't remember a time in recent years when we beat that here, though December 1956 only had 7.7 hours - impressive for somewhere not particularly fog/smog-prone compared to other parts of the city. What's the dullest period you've ever had?
Hampstead beats Paris-Montsouris by a large margin. The dullest month there was December 1993, during which 14.3 sunshine hours were recorded. The November 2010 - February 2011 period was quite dull too, with 141.7 hours recorded over 4 months, about 35 hours per month. I don't have stats for December 1956. I guess the Clean Air Act of 1956 had some effect on winter sunshine after that date?

The Clean Air Act certainly made a difference, though really dull winter months are still possible. Heathrow had its dullest month in December 2010 with 18.5 hours (and 140.3 in that Nov 10-Feb 11 period). The dullest month I have ever experienced (or relatively nearby at least) was 7.2 hours in Bradford in December 1992 - figures like that are exceptional these days, but were much more common in the early 20th century when it was horribly polluted (the whole dataset is here if anyone is interested).

Thanks for the link. The 1910s and 1920s are impressive, with single-digit months almost every other year. December 1918 especially.
The Heathrow sunshine figures are shocking - I didn't realise how cloudy that month was down south, it was lovely and sunny up here, especially the latter half of the month - nothing like waking up to cold mornings with the temperature below -10C and the trees coated in rime.
140 hours of sunshine in June, 199 in July, and a total of 571 hours in June-August! That is an incredibly low number. Of course we have longer days, but that would go down as the second-lowest Jun-Aug period in Helsinki since -61. Luckily you had a nice August and September.
Ha, we had less than that this summer. Sunniest months this year were May and March. Dullest, Jan and Feb, followed by April and June - yes, that's right, the month with the longest daylight hours is the fourth dullest month of the year so far, only 20 or so more hours than Jan and Feb, and around 30 less than October. November is currently at 46 hours, so if we can get a few more hours of sun, we will be approaching June's total again.
