Year round yes.. but I was looking at the height of the dry season for both cities which happens to be at the time of low sun:

(Dec, Jan, Feb) for Miami - 654.6 hours
(Jun, Jul, Aug) for Townsville - 776.5 hours

But he/she was talking about the dry season. Which is sunnier in Townsville.

The 3154.9 hours for Miami is for 1981-2010.
If we check the same period for Townsville on the BOM site the hours have slightly increased to 3139 hours.

Climate statistics for Australian locations

Miami still comes out just on top though.

I would submit that a 16 hr difference is negligable, especially considering the difference in measurement standards between the two countries.

The more important point to note is that Miami has a summer-heavy sunshine pattern whereas Townsville is most sunny in winter.

Agreed. I often wonder how people can even tell a diff of 100 hours over a year long period.

I agree completely about the 16hr difference. I posted the link so that we were comparing apples with apples.
For me a winter sunshine maximum is preferable. This is why I selected Townsville as the victor

At those levels of annual total sun, anything up to 100 hours is probably not really noticeable. However, all the usual caveats previously discussed, about the difficulty of comparing measurements between different countries, apply.

Townsville, less likely to be affected by cold snaps than my second choice, Fort Lauderdale.
