May 31, 1889 - The day of the Johnstown Flood. Over 2,000 people were killed after 10" of rain eroded a dam at an exclusive resort on the Little Conemaugh River upstream from the city.
May 31, 1985 - The day of the Pennsylvania/Ohio Tornado Outbreak (a.k.a. the U.S./Canada Tornado Outbreak). In the United States, Pennsylvania dealt with 21 of the 26 confirmed tornadoes, and 65 of the 76 fatalities.
May 31, 2002 - The day of Kennywood Park microburst. Winds were clocked at over 100 miles per hour, and the pavilion for one of the rides at the amusement park collapsed, killing one person and injuring 47 others.
Interesting coincidences. I assume this time of year is the height of the tornado season in PA. There might be some similar same-date tragedies in the South during March or November because of their tornado seasons.
