I think you are right. Sun isn't pleasant: it blinds (and may cause some car accidents) and hurts the skin (and may cause sunburns or... well, worse things). I don't get why some people would want it the majority of the time. Vegetation can grow even with poor sunshine. It needs rain more than the Sun.

This photo was taken in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, which has 1242 hours of sunshine

And THIS was taken near Yuma, Arizona, which has 4015 hours of sunshine

I mean, the photos speak by themselves

Some Sun is needed, but even low amounts are sufficient

I prefer 2000 - 2300 hours per year. I find it ok! I live in a climate of 2150 hours per year but I find it depressing sometimes where we have consecutive days with rain and clouds and only 98 sunny days. :P

Usual caution regarding Yuma's averages, for comparison purposes.

I suppose about 2,000 hours would be good for me.

In Germany, we have annual sunshine hours of around 1400 to 1800 depending on the regions.
In Hamburg, its around country average (1540 hrs), which I find too low.

In my opinion, the main problem is in fall and winter. We have 1 to 3 hours of sunshine per day at most from November to February.
Spring and summer are relatively good, sunny but still unstable. Meaning that a stretch of 2 sunny weeks might be followed by a cloudy rainy week. July 2013 was superbly sunny. Thank God I did not go for vacation during that month because it would be too bad to miss that weather in Germany.

I would say, if our summers would see STABLE sunny days like in the Med countries (3 sunny months, not necessarily too dry though) and 2 to 3 hours more sun in fall and winter, it would be the perfect deal for me. That is, around 2000 to 2300 hours (e.g. cities like Istanbul).
Anything above 2500 hours would be too sunny for my taste (Athens, Madrid, Beirut, Nicosia, LA, Denver...)

I prefer 1700-2100 hours annually.

I'd like it to be evenly spread out over the year.

In the PNW, summers are way too sunny and winters aren't sunny enough. Bad combination. Eugene gets around 2000-2200.

About 3,000 hours or about 70 percent of possible hours.

3000. Most around morning. I like bright dawns.
