What's to stop them from building snowmen as soon as it stops falling? Even in this scenario it doesn't melt immediately, and even when it melts the next day a foot of snow can be very useful. Plus there's the simple fact that snow is awesome .

Not just Alaska - really anywhere that has autumns that transitions to a real winter can get "useful" autumn snow. Plus autumn snow isn't supposed to stick around through the whole season anyway. If it did stick through the rest of the season it wouldn't be autumn, would it?

Whether it lasts or melts away depends on where you are and how cold the air is. Northern Ireland and New Jersey are quite different from Labrador and Alaska. Even Montana sometimes has lasting snow in November.

The case in point for my case for autumnal snow is occurring right now in Montana. Temperatures are going to plunge into the teens and stay there for a while. Heavy powder and blizzard conditions are on tap, and still Montana hasn't "fully" transitioned to winter, though looking at the 10-day forecast it looks like winter is getting an early start in Montana.

TWC has also christened this new storm "Winter Storm Brutus". Unlike the Election Day Blizzard (or "Athena"), I actually like the name of Brutus for this storm. Somehow it seems to be appropriate. Anyway, here's the 10-day forecast for Glasgow, Montana:

Nov 9: Blizzard, 24/25
Nov 10: Snow Showers, 14/17
Nov 11: Partly Cloudy, -2/6
Nov 12: Partly Cloudy, -5/23
Nov 13: Partly Cloudy, 12/26
Nov 14: Partly Cloudy, 9/25
Nov 15: Partly Cloudy, 16/31
Nov 16: Sunny, 16/33
Nov 17: Scattered Snow Showers, 22/31

Eh. If the snowfall is sizeable it'll stick for at least a day. Here's photos I took last year:

That is unusual, though not as unprecedented as you might think.

Well below normal so far for the area. BDR is 6.2 below normal for the month. a rare sight to see lately.

Here's a daily breakdown for Interior CT and coastal CT.

Notice every single day has been below normal with the High temps.

Notice BDL there. Normal high is 55 degrees, they didnt pass 35 degrees on the 7th! 20 below normal.

Overall I am not surprised by the temperatures - even the US South has continental influences and is prone to rapid temperature changes, especially this time of the year and into spring. The record lows show this quite well.
