Thanks Pat that just about sums it up for me... very informative.

Seems like this new kind of thunder snow may be caused by climate change since it just recently started happening, we'll have to see what's in store for this winter.

I've seen plenty of thunder snow over the years, and during some severe blizzard conditions as well. I've never bothered checking the temps, but it would have been both above and below freezing. Generally from warm fronts meeting cold fronts, which is common weather in these parts.

It has only happened once this winter in the hills around here, but it has been a poor season for snowfall this year.

Not counting thundersnow, the coldest I've seen a thunderstorm here in Indiana was in December when it was in the 40s. We had a rare January tornado at night a couple years ago with temps in the low 50s do some damage on the west side of Indianapolis. But when I lived in the mountains of California, we had a thunderstorm with temps in the upper 30s where I lived at 4000 feet with a snowline around 5500 feet.

This is interesting to me how many places can get this because I see the majority of thunderstorms take place between 15-25c temps during the actual event. Many bring in colder weather after them... I can never remember seeing one outside of 10-30c I have never seen a thundersnow or any cold weather thunder storms I can recall in 30 years of life

I remember a few years ago Amarillo had thunder and snow at -8c surface temps. The photo below is from a post by Cambium in October 2020. That's the coldest I've seen in real time.

As for historical records, that is difficult info to find. I would guess the coldest is something between -10 and -15c. But just speculation.

Back in December of 2007, Oklahoma had a big ice storm. It must have been in the mid 20sF. It was pouring down freezing rain and thundering like a thunderstorm. I remember going to bed to just the sound of the storm, it sounded just like a thunderstorm, but it was below freezing. Very bizarre.
